r-matrices for relativistic deformations of integrable systems
We include the relativistic lattice KP hierarchy, introduced by Gibbons and
Kupershmidt, into the -matrix framework. An -matrix account of the
nonrelativistic lattice KP hierarchy is also provided for the reader's
convenience. All relativistic constructions are regular one-parameter
perturbations of the nonrelativistic ones. We derive in a simple way the linear
Hamiltonian structure of the relativistic lattice KP, and find for the first
time its quadratic Hamiltonian structure. Amasingly, the latter turns out to
coincide with its nonrelativistic counterpart (a phenomenon, known previously
only for the simplest case of the relativistic Toda lattice)
Competitive localization of vortex lines and interacting bosons
We present a theory for the localization of three-dimensional vortex lines or
two-dimensional bosons with short-ranged repulsive interaction which are
competing for a single columnar defect or potential well. For two vortices we
use a necklace model approach to find a new kind of delocalization transition
between two different states with a single bound particle. This
exchange-delocalization transition is characterized by the onset of vortex
exchange on the defect for sufficiently weak vortex-vortex repulsion or
sufficiently weak binding energy corresponding to high temperature. We
calculate the transition point and order of the exchange-delocalization
transition. A generalization of this transition to arbitrary vortex number is
proposed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
A note on the integrable discretization of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation
We revisit integrable discretizations for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger
equation due to Ablowitz and Ladik. We demonstrate how their main drawback, the
non-locality, can be overcome. Namely, we factorize the non-local difference
scheme into the product of local ones. This must improve the performance of the
scheme in the numerical computations dramatically. Using the equivalence of the
Ablowitz--Ladik and the relativistic Toda hierarchies, we find the
interpolating Hamiltonians for the local schemes and show how to solve them in
terms of matrix factorizations.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, revised and extended versio
A discrete time relativistic Toda lattice
Four integrable symplectic maps approximating two Hamiltonian flows from the
relativistic Toda hierarchy are introduced. They are demostrated to belong to
the same hierarchy and to examplify the general scheme for symplectic maps on
groups equiped with quadratic Poisson brackets. The initial value problem for
the difference equations is solved in terms of a factorization problem in a
group. Interpolating Hamiltonian flows are found for all the maps.Comment: 32 pages, LaTe
Symplectic algorithm for constant-pressure molecular dynamics using a Nose-Poincare thermostat
We present a new algorithm for isothermal-isobaric molecular-dynamics
simulation. The method uses an extended Hamiltonian with an Andersen piston
combined with the Nos'e-Poincar'e thermostat, recently developed by Bond,
Leimkuhler and Laird [J. Comp. Phys., 151, (1999)]. This
Nos'e-Poincar'e-Andersen (NPA) formulation has advantages over the
Nos'e-Hoover-Andersen approach in that the NPA is Hamiltonian and can take
advantage of symplectic integration schemes, which lead to enhanced stability
for long-time simulations. The equations of motion are integrated using a
Generalized Leapfrog Algorithm and the method is easy to implement, symplectic,
explicit and time reversible. To demonstrate the stability of the method we
show results for test simulations using a model for aluminum.Comment: 7 page
Correlates of extracurricular sport participation among Swiss adolescents
Background: Based on a large national survey on the health of adolescents, this paper focuses on the socio-demographic and lifestyle correlates of sport practice among Swiss adolescents. The SMASH2002 database includes 7428 vocational apprentices and high school students between the ages of 16 and 20 who answered a self-administered anonymous questionnaire containing 565 items targeting perceived health, health attitudes and behaviour. Weekly episodes of extracurricular sport activity were measured by a four-category scale, and the sample was dichotomised between active (≥two episodes of sport/week) and inactive (<two episodes of sport/week) respondents. Thirty percent of female respondents and 40.2% of male respondents reported engaging in sport activity at least two to three times a week; another 9.7% of the female and 19.4% of the male respondents reported participating in least one sport activity each day (p<0.01). The percentage of active respondents was higher among students than among vocational apprentices (p<.01), and the rates of sport activity decreased more sharply over time among the apprentices than among the students (p<0.01). Most active adolescents reported having a better feeling of well-being than their inactive peers [among male students: odds ratio (OR): 3.13; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.28-7.70]. The percentage of active females who reported being on a diet was high, and female apprentices exhibited higher involvement in dieting than their inactive peers (OR: 1.68; 95%CI: 1.32-2.14). Relative to the inactive male respondents, the proportion of active male respondents smoking was lower; however, a lower proportion of the latter group did not report drunkenness, and the percentage of those who reported lifetime cannabis consumption was higher among active than inactive students (females, OR:1.57; 95%CI:1.09-2.25; males, OR:1.80; 95%CI: 20-2.69). Conclusion: Organised sport activities should be better tailored to the work schedules of apprentices. Practitioners should be aware of the potential for problematic behaviour in the area of dieting and substance use among a subset of sport-oriented adolescent
Room-temperature transverse-electric polarized intersubband electroluminescence from InAs/AlInAs quantum dashes
We report the observation of transverse electric polarized
electroluminescence from InAs/AlInAs quantum dash quantum cascade structures up
to room temperature. The emission is attributed to the electric field confined
along the shortest lateral dimension of the dashes, as confirmed by its
dependence on crystallographic orientation both in absorption measurements on a
dedicated sample and from electroluminescence itself. From the absorption we
estimate a dipole moment for the observed transition of =1.7 nm. The
electroluminescence is peaked at around 110 meV and increases with applied
bias. Its temperature dependence shows a decrease at higher temperatures
limited by optical phonon emission.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter
On the Lagrangian structure of 3D consistent systems of asymmetric quad-equations
Recently, the first-named author gave a classification of 3D consistent
6-tuples of quad-equations with the tetrahedron property; several novel
asymmetric 6-tuples have been found. Due to 3D consistency, these 6-tuples can
be extended to discrete integrable systems on Z^m. We establish Lagrangian
structures and flip-invariance of the action functional for the class of
discrete integrable systems involving equations for which some of the
biquadratics are non-degenerate and some are degenerate. This class covers,
among others, some of the above mentioned novel systems.Comment: 21 pp, pdfLaTe
